Eight Indications of Waste

Removing waste, or muda is an essential part of the process of value stream management. There are several types of muda; however, eliminating unnecessary work is often a considerable payback - for the good of the flow of the value stream.

Sometimes you will find people that defend waste. They protect it for, what they believe, is a good reason. Maybe they state things like in the attached video, perhaps you realize it in some other way,

Nevertheless, you must challenge the status quo and old habits and decisions if you want to increase flow. Because here, in my experience, often lies a tremendous amount of waste that is a candidate to be removed. Not always in an easy way, but when removed, the flow can increase dramatically.

What should you do to convince the "defenders"? Here is where you need probably need to take a coaching approach. You can never convince them; they have to understand themselves. So help them understand. Challenge with some powerful questions! The payback might be extraordinary.

  • What is this step really about?

  • What would be required to remove it?

  • How can we make a small experiment?
